What Are You Creating Today? + Video

Hello friends!  What are you creating on this quiet summer Sunday?

I’ve been busy creating layer 1 of some soon to be fabulous mixed media backgrounds that I will be binding together to create my very own album for memory keeping!

Mixed media backgrounds with distress oxides

I’ve created 16 backgrounds so far!  I created along with Vicki Boutin on Friday night during her Facebook Live.  She’s focusing August on Distress inks and we will be binding the pages together to create our own book to use as an art journal or for memory keeping.  She will be doing a free book binding class at the end of August.  The last one was amazing, so I can’t wait to see what else she has planned to teach us for layering on these backgrounds for August.

You know these aren’t finished!  Mixed media is all about the layers.

I spent yesterday morning creating some backgrounds on my own, trying different color combinations and mixed media backgrounds.

I pulled a package of 12 x 12″ vanilla card stock off my shelf where it has been for years, and I added gesso to some sheets and matte acrylic gel to others.  I used a brayer on some and my palette knife on others just to get some interesting textures.

My goals are to use up some of my craft stash that I’ve had sitting here for a while and to learn how to use all the mixed media tools, mediums, and techniques.  I’m really loving mixed media.

Between my watercoloring, Copic coloring, lettering practice and now my mixed media experiments…I’m BUSY!  It’s a good think I retired because I don’t know how I would fit work in at this point!

Work was just getting in the way of my artistic creativity!  (Luckily, teaching allowed me to be very creative with my lesson design and presentation, so I had a daily outlet for my creativity for the last 44 years!)

I love that I’m learning how different materials behave or react together as I play with the stuff on my shelves.  I was delighted that Vicki did an impromptu Live last night just because she wanted to create some backgrounds too.  I can’t wait for her Wednesday live!

I’ve also been adding more to my Traveler’s Notebook…lots to add once we got our electricity back and got a lot of our storm debris cleaned up.  You know those pictures are already telling the story in my littler memory keeping traveler’s notebook!

Here is a video I created and didn’t get to share because we were without electricity and internet earlier this week…this is the process I used for creating my traveler’s notebook out of stuff in my stash.

For the record…I have used up supplies and freed up 1 drawer and 1 shelf so far!  I’m making beautiful and functional projects that I love and that I am using besides!  I’m loving this!
