I have been experimenting with background techniques for my rubber stamping projects. For the past couple of weeks, I have been trying out a technique using rubber bands on my clear blocks. This gives you a really fun and fabulous background image for your card!
Isn’t this card an eye-popper?! I think it’s that Melon Mambo! Every time I stamp with it, it makes me say “WOW!”, right out loud!
I used my largest clear block (Block F #118483) and covered it with rubber bands. As you can see from the image, I had them going in all directions. I tried several different methods to then stamp the paper with the inked up rubber bands. First, I just stamped it as I would any stamp and I got far fewer lines than you see on the card above. Then, using my hands to rub the back of the paper, I got smudge marks between the band lines (which actually didn’t look bad). The technique I finally decided on was to use a brayer (#102395) and very lightly roll it across the paper. If you apply any pressure at all, you get ink marks in between the lines. (You can see one on the upper right of this card!)
All in all, I like the technique. It’s different and I do like a background on a card, whether it is a stamped image, embossing or Designer Series Paper. My card is finished off with the Everything Eleanor (#124164) stamp cut out with paper snips and a sentiment from Blooming with Kindness (#126422) cut out with my Scallop Oval Punch (#119856). I used a piece of pear pizzazz from the Clearance Rack for next to nothing!!!! You could substitute ribbon in Gumball Green, Old Olive or Lucky Limeade instead. Use what you have in that ribbon stash of yours! (I know you have one!)
I created a video tutorial to help you see how I did this technique!
The card also uses Whisper White and Melon Mambo card stock and ink. When you are done stamping with your rubber band covered clear block, just run it and the brayer under the faucet and dry them with a paper towel. The ink is washable (from everything but my hands!). You can use the rubber bands over again next time you are feeling adventurous!
