Falling in love with mixed media is so easy to do.
It starts small.
You try some glitter glaze here, a distress crayon there, embossing paste comes next and suddenly you are stenciling and watercoloring everything!
It is ridiculously addictive.
Suddenly you will own every possible color of embossing mousse and then the company comes out with the puffy version!
Why?? I don’t need any more craft stash addictions!
It starts by trying one little product and then the next thing you know, you’ve made 3 cards with 12 different products and there is no space left to work on your table.
My day started with some Nuvo Raspberry Rhodolite Glimmer Paste. I decided to smear some on a card front to see what it looked like.
It was so pretty. It really sparkles. That’s right. It sparkles.
That made me realize that I had gotten some Brutus Monroe glitter glaze in December in Flamingo and Scarlet.
Well, let’s smear that on a card front and see what happens.
Oh man! They look amazing. Even more sparkle. Plus, I can’t believe those colors look so nice together. All I did was to take my trusty plastic spatula and swipe them on the paper.
When I pulled out the Brutus Monroe glitter glaze I realized that I also got his hearts stencil.
I love his hearts stencil.
It’s so artsy!
Then I remembered that I got two free distress crayons from Scrapbook.com with my last order and one of them was pink.
I swear to you that this is always how my creative process works.
There is no plan.
I have to plan my work days down to the minute and have extra things planned in case my students finish early or what I had planned doesn’t work for some reason. I don’t want to plan my creative time.
I want the freedom to not plan. I want to be free to play and experiment and create!
Now I had 3 fabulous backgrounds that needed images, sentiments, and layouts.
I also had Catherine Pooler’s latest Doodle Hearts stamp and die set that I’ve been dying to play with.
I stamped a bunch of hearts on card stock and watercolor paper and pulled out my Zig Real Brush pens which are a watercolor medium and my Copic markers. I colored them in and die cut them. I wasn’t in love with my coloring job with either of those mediums, but I’ve learned not to throw out my work until the card is done. I usually end up liking the end products.
Usually.
There are always those stinkers that you create and just give a toss!
I heat embossed the images in WOW Ebony Black Embossing powder. This is my favorite black embossing powder. It is so shiny!
I added some fun colorful striped paper from the latest MFT Stamps release. This is the 6 x 6″ Sweet Stack of patterned paper and it is full of love!
The original card has a piece of Lawn Fawn’s Really Rainbow 6 x 6″ stack that I cut with my MFT Stamps Wonky Rectangle dies. I added a piece of the dark red card stock from my stash along with some more of those HAI Heart Drops and some black splatters to the stenciled card base. My colored hearts are popped up on foam tape for dimension and BOOM! 3 cards done.
So…if you were keeping up here are the mixed media products I used:
- NUVO glimmer paste with a spatula
- Brutus Monroe glitter glaze with a spatula
- distress crayons with a stencil
- Copic markers
- Watercolor brush pens
- heat embossing
- there is also specialty paper, including velum
- enamel heart drops
- black splatter made from my Altenew permanent black ink pad
- Plus…die cutting
That’s mixed media!
I’m entering this in this week’s Stamp Ink Paper Challenge: Love!

Beautiful cards Kim, thanks so much for joining us this week at Stamp Ink Paper. Carolyn xx
I really love your artsy take on Mix Media, Kim! I do know what you mean about “addictive” (ha-ha)! It is just so fun and relaxing to play with these art supplies. I take every creative process as a great art therapy!! I really like your last card–so beautifully composed and executed!
Virginia, I so agree. Being creative just seems to fill you up. I always end up feeling better!
Kim this post got a laugh out of me. I am behind in reading your posts just due to “life” I love what you created. So colorful and uplifting. I tend to plan out my designs. I need to work on just sitting down and try different out of the box things. The other day while walking on our treadmill, yes I did say on the treadmill- will see how long this lasts, I actually designed a card in my head and it came out as I envisioned it. There is a little hope in me to become more creative!
Thanks for sharing.
It’s good to distract yourself with card designs on the treadmill!
