Card Making Technique: Stencil Tracing

By | 07/17/2024

This week’s Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge (atlanticheartschallenge.blogspot.com) inspired me to try a new stenciling technique.  Just when you think you’ve tried all the techniques, you find a new to you idea you can’t wait to try.

This week’s sketch challenge:

Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge July15

I have a lot of stacking die shapes, but I don’t have a diamond shape!

I do have squares and I decided to use those and turn them on their side.  I also wanted to use the new Changing Leaves bundle that I just got from the Online Exclusives for July at Stampin’ Up!

I make it a point to use my stamps and dies as soon as I get them so they aren’t just sitting on a shelf.  Most of the time using them just once leads to using them many more times.

The Changing Leaves bundle came with a stamp set, a 3D Cut and Emboss folder and die set.

I pulled out an old stencil from my stash that has circles in a variety of sizes. The background of my card is made with this stencil!

As a child, I had some alphabet stencils that I played with.  I traced around the inside of the letters with my pencil and then colored them in.  That is the technique that I did today!

I traced around the inside and outside of the circles and then used daubers to add color.  I added Crushed Curry, Old Olive, and Cajun Craze to them.  When I removed the stencil, I absolutely LOVED the result.

I made a couple of panels and used my square dies to cut one up and my circle dies to cut the other one.

How fun is this to add a pop of color to your card?

The next delightful surprise for me was when I pulled out some inexpensive gold foil specialty paper from my stash that I want to use up.  I ran it through the Changing Leaves Cut & Emboss embossing folder with the dies.  OMG! Look at the leaves adorning my cards! Even the back of them is pretty!!

There are 3 sentiment dies included in the die set.  Isn’t the oval sentiment die fabulous? And the sentiment? Love it all.

I added some layers, some old Cajun Craze enamel dots and some old twine.  I’m super happy with how these cards turned out.
