Experimenting With Mixed Media

By | 04/14/2020

I’ve been watching a lot of Vicki Boutin Live lately.  I just love Vicki Boutin.  She’s a mixed media artist with a product line through American Crafts and she makes it seem perfectly normal to love experimenting with different mediums and materials.

Plus, she’s all about getting messy in the process.

She’s my hero!  I love to experiment with different tools, techniques and mediums.  I decided to share one of my experiments today and I’m not loving it.

I’m sharing it anyway!

Layering Stencils With Mixed Media

I was playing around with Taylored Expressions Layering Stencils and Stripe Stencils today.  I pulled out some Distress Oxide inks and blended the Mustard Seed on which gave me a nice bright yellow and white striped card.

I almost wish I’d stopped there!  No…I didn’t listen when Vicki kept saying that you need to know when to stop!

I added blue in between the yellow and then I pulled out the Spring Fling Layering Stencil.  I added that with the same Broken China blue with the leaf layer over the yellow, knowing that I would get green leaves.  The stencil slipped and I got a big blob of blue where I didn’t want it, so I blended the blue all over the card.  It gave me a layered green look.

I took the second layer of the stencil and used Wilted Violet to add the flowers.  The third layer gave me the flower centers and I used a lovely NUVO Glacier Paste in Pineapple Delight.

The die cut flower and leaves is from Catherine Poolers So Happy stamp set, as is the sentiment.

This sentiment just feels so right lately.  Mostly I just want to be.  (I’m supposed to add the giant Happy sentiment with it, I suppose.  It sort of feels right just the way it is.)

The layout and the stripes were inspired by this week’s Atlantic Hearts Sketch Challenge:

I am always amazed by how my creativity is affected by my mood.  It’s been overcast here the last couple of days and I will admit to feeling a little blah.  My muted card reflects that mood!  It’s not reflective of the bright colorful cards that I’ve been making.  It has a lot of color, but I wouldn’t call it colorful.

Some days you’re just in a muted tone kinda mood!

Have a very wonderful day!  I hope you are finding your creativity!
