8 Card Challenge!

By | 02/03/2013

I’m challenging myself to see if I can make 8 great cards starting with the same 3 pieces of card stock.  Stampin’ Up! has so many great tools and stamp sets, it seems like it should be a piece of cake!  Here is my first card!

My Color Choices and Inspiration:

I decided that I would use red and white paper and any inks or embellishments that I want.  I can also use all my tools.  I can’t make a card without my punches or my Big Shot.  I know it’s February and Women’s Heart Health month.  I’d like to say that was the inspiration for the colors.

I have to be honest.  My inspiration came from a trip to the local outlet mall with my daughter yesterday.  When I walked into Dooney and Bourke, the store was filled with shades of reds, pinks and wines.  (And…those colors were an extra 15% off the already reduced prices.  Of course I left with a new bag.  Shamelessly.)

How did I decide on 8 cards?  Well, I decided I would need at least 4 sheets of a neutral card stock for a card base.  I decided to go with Whisper White.  I also decided that I would need at least one card stock in some color.  I decided I would use 1 piece of Real Red card stock.  I kept cutting it in half until I had 8 pieces, each measuring 2-3/4 x 4-1/4″.  Hence, 8 cards are possible!

I also decided I would need at least one sheet of Whisper White that I could layer on top of the red.  I love layers!  I decided to make the white layers 2-1/4 x 4″ each so that they will would layer nicely on top of the red.  That left me with a 1″ strip and a 1/2″ strip left to use on the cards as well.

I made two cards today.  You can see the second one on my Facebook page by clicking here!  While you are there, be sure to “Like” the page and you can download the free printable journals for your scrapbooking projects!

Supplies for the butterfly card:

Stamp Sets:  Papillon Potpourri (#123759) and Perfectly Penned (#122892)

Ink: Regal Rose (#126947), Melon Mambo (#126948)

Accessories:  Elegant Butterfly Punch (#127526), Bitty Butterfly Punch (#129406), Pearls (#119247), Big Shot (#113439), Square Lattice Embossing Folder (#119976)

Tips:

  • Emboss the red card stock and then punch out the butterflies from the center so that the white can be layered on top of the red.
  • Stamp the butterflies twice.  Stamp the solid image in the lighter Regal Rose color and then stamp the outline in the darker Melon Mambo.
  • I did not try to line them up.  If you are more of a perfectionist, you can line them up with the Stamp-a-ma-jig.
  • I layered a smaller butterfly on top of a larger one for the butterfly in the upper right corner.
