Advanced Die Cutting: Partial Die Cutting

By | 01/25/2018

I have to say that I really struggled with this technique and I have a ways to go to perfect it.

The technique involves creating a shim to die cut only the area you want cut.

I think it may be a matter of matching up the shim shape with the appropriate intricate die.

The card on the left uses Stampin’ Up!’s Flourishing Phrases die set and a sentiment from the Feather Together set.  I added a bit to the card by adding some extra gold foil die cuts from the same set.  That was mostly to cover the parts that didn’t come out as well as I would have liked.

I snipped pieces off the gold dies to make it work for the circular shape.  The background paper is from the Color Theory Designer Paper stack.  I really like that as a background peeking through the leafy cut out shapes.

I love the gold glitter washi tape.  I don’t know why Stampin’ Up! stopped carrying that.  It adds such a nice touch to a card and it is so quick to stick down a piece of washi tape and have bling on your card.

Up close you can really see the layers that this has.  It has a delicate look with the white die in the back.

It is quite a nice technique, but I’ll be playing around with it some more until I’ve mastered it!

The second card is actually the first one I made.  This uses some products from Altenew.  The card uses Altenew’s Leafy Garland die, some ink blending for the background and a sentiment from the Birthday Builder stamp set that is also from Altenew.Stamping Imperfection Partial Die Cutting

I think that I will be looking for a less detailed die to try this technique with.  I might start with something a little simpler that is already a circular shape.  This involved fitting a very detailed die around a circle on one side and then cutting it again on the second side.

I believe this is a matter of learning how to line them up correctly for the second cut.

I’m loving the class that I’m taking and I’m learning a lot of little tips and tricks.  I signed up for more classes today doing more advanced techniques.
