I’m super excited to be the featured designer on today’s LOAD Challenge at Scrap Happy!
I was sent the story and technique prompts in September and I felt challenged!!!
Story: Is there something you do in a precise way. Is there a long held tradition that Covid has made you change. Are you very stoic or is there someone in your life that never smiles or laughs.
Technique: Use Red, Black and Gold.
There was a long story about the Changing of the Guard ceremony at Buckingham Palace. We actually took one spectacular vacation with our children when they were growing up and that was to London. We saw the Changing of the Guard Ceremony, but we aren’t in those pictures so I wanted to use an event relevant to our lives.
I chose my youngest “child’s” college graduation!
I can’t think of a more appropriate Changing of the Guard event for our family than when my youngest son graduated from college. I used a picture we took of our kids on his campus while he was in his robes and my daughter in her college’s alumni beer jacket. (Yep…it’s tradition there!) I chose this picture because it is the younger generation starting on their journey into adulthood hoping to make a difference. I added a smaller photo of me and my husband, the older generation, enjoying a job well done. My daughter graduated in 2014 from a university steeped in centuries of tradition with lots of ceremony, celebration, and fanfare in a 4-day family and alumni event. The following year was my son’s college graduation and he decided that he was over the traditional ceremony and wanted a special day in his campus town doing family things. He picked up his cap and gown so I could get pictures and he knew that would make me happy! Both kids got exactly the celebration they wanted for their big day and I got the photos I wanted to document our stories!
I really layered this page!!! I had so many great things that I wanted to use. I loved the circular view finder die cut from 49th & Market that I used as the base for this large ephemera cluster. I also had a lot of elements from a package of Tim Holtz ephemera that was just perfect for an education related theme. The periodic table was great because all 4 of us are science majors and I taught science for 31 years! There is a perfect attendance certificate, an alphabet chart, a postage stamp and there is a library card from Layle by Mail. I added some sentiment strips and chipboard elements. I finished it off with some wood veneers and gold sequins along with a VERY old gold doily from my stash.
The page base is a pre-made mixed media page from Vicki Boutin!
I did my journaling on a piece of heavy duty vellum and added it to my page. I also have a small cluster of ephemera at the top of the page. I’ve used some gold glitter puffy heart stickers around the page as well.
I included a smaller ephemera cluster in the bottom corner to feature the “old guard”. I pulled in a circular element to anchor this section as well. I’ve included tickets, tags, and another postage stamp. You can see another wood veneer, gold puffy heart and gold sequins to complete my visual triangle.
I had so much fun creating this page and I loved how it turned out! I wanted to share it with you weeks ago and I had to wait!! It was killin’ me!
I’m also enjoying the subscription to the Scrap Happy Family scrapbook site. I’ve really fallen in love with scrapbooking again and this group has been so welcoming. I am loving this LOAD challenge even though doing a new layout every single day is A LOT!!
I’m using some new things, but I’m really digging into my stash to use up some of the older stuff. I’ve used half of my patterned paper stash that I have had for well over 5 years just sitting there to be loved! The Washi tape, sequins, veneers and so forth are coming in handy.
This has been a sure fire way to fall in love with my stash all over again. I’m getting my money out of this!
Thank you for stopping by! Have a fantastic day!!
