Exploring Watercolor Mediums To Create A Faux Watercolor Look

By | 07/21/2020

Watercolor is one of those techniques that a lot of people are afraid to try.  One of the things that I adore about it is that there are so many different ways to get that watercolor look and every single one of them is fun to try.

This is an old technique, but a good one.  I’m taking another class through Altenew called Exploring Watercolor Mediums and I didn’t have just the right stamp set for this technique today.  I had plenty of sets with perfect stems of leaves, but I didn’t have a layering floral that I thought would work well.  I gave it a go anyway with a couple of layered stamp sets that I thought might sort of work!

I actually really liked the way this came out.  The leaves were perfect for this technique and they came from the Wallpaper Art stamp set.  You need a solid stamp for this to work well.  Essentially, you ink up the stamp and mist is 2 or 3 times and then stamp it.  If you get a blob, you’ve added too much water.  You want enough water for the ink to flow and give you a watercolor look.

I did the same technique for the florals, but with a layered stamp set.  I selected two shades of each color and inked the solid stamp with the lightest color, misted it and then stamped it.  When the piece dried, I then added the second layer and did the same thing but with the darker of the two colors.

This is stamped with the Bamboo and Moss inks, Wisteria and Ultraviolet, and Ocean Waves and Desert Night inks.  I used Antique Gold embossing powder for the outline image of the florals.

To finish off this card, I added some mist in the two lightest colors and topped it off with some sequins.  The florals are from the Lotus stamp set and the sentiment is from the Build-a-Flower: Sakura Blossom stamp set.  This set has fabulous sentiments.

I created a second card with the Sakura Blossom set and the same Wallpaper Art leaves.

I like this, but I definitely did not get as much of a watercolor look on the florals here.  I used Sunray and Snapdragon inks, Bamboo and Moss, and Iceberg and Ultramarine.  I also used Antique Gold embossing powder for the center.  This one was also finished off with sequins as well.
