We are having a fun team challenge on the Scrapping 4 Fun Challenge blog for the next couple of days! All of the designers have created a project for a color challenge given to us by Rachelle, the team coordinator. There was a twist on the challenge to use a line from a song or a poem that we liked somewhere on the project.
You will also find all the challenge winners from 2020 are participating in a challenge as well.
The Color Challenge we were given:
I considered making a hot chocolate themed project, but I had a hankering to do some mixed media and step outside my comfort zone.
I had also learned how to make a fun gift box out of 2 pieces of 12 x 12″ paper by just folding them…no adhesive required. I knew that I wanted to make a little gift box so a Christmas tag or two seemed like a great pairing for my project.
Catherine Pooler inks were just perfect for this challenge, so I pulled those out. Icing on the Cake, Sand Castle, and Rockin’ Red.
I used a fabulous piece of 12 x 12″ patterned paper for the box from the Photoplay Christmas Cheer paper. I added some die cut poinsettias that I created from some cherry red and kraft card stocks with my Sunny Studio Layered Poinsettia die set. I added some natural twine and some cream enamel flower embellishments that I’ve had in my stash for ages. (My next newsletter will have the directions for how to create that box!)
The tag started out as a pretty piece of 6 x 6″ patterned paper from 49th and Market. I used my tag punch and a couple of circle punches to create the pieces. I started by edging the tag in red ink and the stamping the tag in the darker brown ink with some stamps I have from 49th and Market called Ticket Express. Then I did some stenciling with the Altenew Classic Pine Stencil B and added some pine cones. I then added the Let It Snow stencil from Carta Bella. I used the Oh Holy Night stencil from Echo Park with some pretty Rose Gold Glaze from Vicki Boutin’s line.
Once the glaze dried, I blended a layer of Nuvo Embellisment Mousse in Mother of Pearl over the top.
I also created a little tag using the Sunny Studio Stamps Christmas Trimmings stamp set. I die cut a few and stamped a few directly on the tab. I hand wrote the “to” and “from” on the tag with a journaling pen and attached it to the tag. I added a die cut pine cone to the top.
Then it needed some sparkle! I added some die cut snowflakes cut from red glitter paper using Altenew’s Snowflake die. I added those in a double layer and topped them with some gems and a snowflake trinket from my stash.
Then I covered the entire thing with white gouache splatters.
I added a line from a song by Radney Foster called “Everyday Angel”. “Go be an everyday angel”, is written in gel pen on red and added to the bottom of the tag. The finishing touch is some red around the edges of the tag and some natural and red twine as a bow.
I really loved the poinsettia die set and the Christmas Trimmings stamp set from Sunny Studio stamps. I was very happy with how easily everything layered together and how pretty it all looked when it was finished.
I enjoyed creating the mixed media tag and adding everything I could think of that I have learned throughout the year to this piece!
In 2021, I will be participating in the Wanderlust Adventure which is a weekly mixed media series of classes from mixed media experts in the field. I also will be participating in N*Studio’s mixed media classes in January as well. I’m looking forward to some of the new things I’ve got lined up for 2021. I have several virtual events that I decided to participate in. I’m doing another Crop & Create Delivered, another ScrapSmarter event, and an event with Kindred Stamps. I’ve also decided to sign up for Heidi Swapp’s Stop the Blur class and Victoria Marie’s Scrapbooking class. I even signed up for a scrapbooking class through Scrapbook & Cards Today magazine that I’m really looking forward to. I love new challenges and new techniques so I can bring more interesting things to you!
I can’t wait! Having plans is making me look forward to this year instead of thinking about another 6-8 months of quarantine, I’m thinking about the virtual events that each month holds! I hope you are finding classes and virtual crafting events that you are looking forward to!
