Deciding to use sketches created by traveler’s notebook experts was a brilliant plan on my part! I’m currently working through the 25 sketches created by Lisa Hidy and I’m entering her monthly challenges. I love playing along with challenges. I think it really helps you practice skills and using sketches helps give you ideas for future projects.
I also think that using the sketches is giving me more confidence in creating these layouts. I’m new to traveler’s notebooks and I was feeling like I was just pasting things on the page. Now, I’m LOVING the pages I’m creating because there is a design plan to the layout. Using the sketches is helping me to “get” what I should be doing instead of what I was doing.
This one used her TN Sketch #9.
I loved this layout and I used the prompt from the Layout A Day challenge at ScrapHappy to create a layout about the origins of someone’s name. This was a fun layout since I recently discovered that my maiden name is not the name that my Great Grandfather was born with!!! I should have been a Biddiscombe!
I am using elements from the January Hip Kit Club in an effort to use all the pieces before the February kit gets here!!!!
I created today’s layout using sketch #17 from Lisa’s blog.
Here is the sketch:
Here is one I made a few days ago before I started using the sketches:
I see a huge difference! The layouts with the sketches are organized and leave more white space on the page. They also call for using more paper layers, strips and they keep the ephemera in that visual triangle you hear about so often. The one I created before I started playing with sketches feels like the images need some grounding with the paper layers or the horizontal elements.
I’m going to continue to work with the sketches until I get to the point where I’m making my own layouts and paying attention to the design detials…like the visual triangles, the image grounding and so forth.
I hope you are finding time to create! Thank you for taking time out of your day to stop by and check out my latest creations!!
