The First Ever Make The Cards Challenge!

By | 01/25/2021

Today I’m sharing my first card as a Design Team member for the Make the Card Challenge!

First Ever Make the Card Challenge

Welcome to the first ever Make the Card Challenge!  This is a brand-new card making challenge that will have a constantly changing theme.  Sometimes it will be a sketch challenge, sometimes you will find a color challenge, and sometimes you will see a theme or technique.  We are hoping to keep you surprised and challenged!

Enter each week for the chance to be selected as the Featured Designer for the following challenge!

The very first challenge for this week is a sketch challenge!

First Ever Make the Card Challenge

I had a lot of fun creating this card.  I used a fabulous stamp set called Flamingo Botanical from The Rabbit Hole Designs that has absolutely wonderful sentiment stamps.  I plan on using them on some scrapbook layouts in the future.

I have been predominantly using my Copic markers and die cutting techniques to create cards and projects lately.  I have been letting my watercolor supplies sit unloved for a while.

Today, I decided to get them out and play!  I used my Karin Brushmarker Pro set to color in this fabulous flamingo and create the scene behind her.

This is really the first time that I have played with these Brushmarkers, so I did not pay attention to color names.  I just pulled out a pen that looked like the color I wanted and played with my technique.  I tried a few different ways of adding the color to the image and I decided that I liked adding water to the image, dotting the color in with the marker and then using a small round paint brush to pull the color out into the image.

Once I got the image all colored, I added some white gel pen details to the water to create a wave splashing look behind the flamingo in the distance and to make the water look like it sparkles.

I had fun creating the sky with the clouds and used some of the same coloring techniques that I have been perfecting with my Copics.

Isn’t the sentiment so spot on?  It is like a piece of great advice your grandmother gave you!  I couldn’t fit the sentiment in any of my circle dies or punches that were small enough to fit on the card, so I cut it apart like sentiment strips and added them to the card without a shape behind them.  I really like how this turned out, even though it took a small modification of the sketch to do it!

I always consider a sketch a suggestion for a card layout and I end up changing at least one part to make it my own.  You can still see the layout and elements of the sketch in my layout, so it works!
